FAQs › Can Acupuncture Help With Menopause?
Yes — a 2019 clinical trial (BMJ Open) found acupuncture significantly reduced hot flush frequency and severity, improved sleep, and enhanced emotional wellbeing in menopausal women. Effects were maintained at 3-month follow-up.
The Danish pragmatic trial (Lund et al., BMJ Open 2019) followed 70 menopausal women through a 5-week acupuncture course. Statistically significant improvements were found in hot flush frequency and severity (reduced by 35–40%), night sweats, sleep quality, emotional wellbeing, and physical comfort. All improvements were maintained at 3-month follow-up with no additional treatment.
Acupuncture is particularly valuable for women who are not candidates for HRT (personal preference, hormone-sensitive cancer history, clotting disorders) and for those who have tried HRT and continue to have residual symptoms. It is also effective when used alongside HRT, often allowing dose reduction over time.
Different menopausal symptom patterns reflect different TCM patterns. Hot flushes from Empty Heat (Kidney Yin deficiency) require cooling, nourishing formulas (Zhi Bai Di Huang Wan). Mixed Yin-Yang deficiency with both hot and cold symptoms requires a more complex formula (Er Xian Tang). Sleep disturbance with palpitations reflects Heart-Kidney disharmony (Tian Wang Bu Xin Dan).
Accurate pattern identification is essential — the wrong formula for the wrong pattern will not produce results. This is one of the core values of a full TCM consultation over a standardised supplement.
