A comprehensive suite of evidence-informed Chinese Medicine and integrative therapies — all under one roof.
Dr Christine Shen draws on a rich toolkit of traditional Chinese Medicine modalities and complementary therapies. Each treatment session is tailored to your individual diagnosis — treatments are combined, sequenced and adjusted based on your TCM pattern, the condition being addressed, and your personal preferences. You will never receive a one-size-fits-all treatment at Rainbow Medicine.
Acupuncture involves the gentle insertion of ultra-fine, sterile, single-use needles at specific points along the body's meridian system to regulate the flow of Qi and Blood, calm the nervous system and stimulate the body's own healing responses. It is the cornerstone treatment at Rainbow Medicine and is used for conditions ranging from pain and fertility to insomnia and digestive health. Modern research has identified mechanisms including endorphin release, regulation of the autonomic nervous system, and anti-inflammatory effects.
Chinese herbal medicine is one of the most sophisticated and extensively documented herbal medicine systems in the world, with a recorded history spanning over 2,000 years. Individualised herbal formulas — typically combinations of 8–15 medicinal substances — are prescribed based on your precise TCM diagnosis and adjusted as your health pattern evolves. All herbs used at Rainbow Medicine are sourced from TGA-compliant suppliers and batch-tested for heavy metals and contaminants. Formulas are available in granule, capsule or raw form to suit patient preferences.
Moxibustion involves the burning of compressed dried mugwort (Artemisia vulgaris, known in Chinese as 'Ai Ye') near or on acupuncture points to warm and stimulate them. The gentle radiant heat produced penetrates deeply into the tissue, tonifying Qi and Yang, warming the meridians, expelling Cold and Damp pathogenic factors, and promoting circulation of Qi and Blood. Moxibustion is particularly beneficial for conditions involving Cold patterns, Yang deficiency, chronic fatigue, certain types of menstrual pain and the famous 'breech baby' protocol (BL 67 point at 34–37 weeks gestation).
Cupping uses glass, silicone or plastic cups placed on the skin to create a suction effect that lifts and separates tissue layers, promoting the circulation of Qi and Blood, releasing myofascial tension and drawing out pathogenic Damp and Cold from deeper tissues. At Rainbow Medicine, both stationary cupping (cups held in place) and sliding cupping (cups moved along muscle groups for a broad treatment effect) are used. Temporary circular marks are common and typically fade within 3–7 days. Cupping is deeply relaxing and is frequently combined with acupuncture in a single session.
Tui Na is a sophisticated Chinese therapeutic massage system that works along the meridians and sinew channels of the body using a range of specialised hand techniques — including rolling, kneading, grasping, pressing, plucking and percussion. Unlike general relaxation massage, Tui Na is a diagnosis-driven therapy applied to specific anatomical regions and channel pathways. It is particularly effective for musculoskeletal pain, joint stiffness, sports injuries and conditions where restoring free flow of Qi in the sinew channels is the treatment priority. Tui Na is often incorporated into acupuncture sessions.
Gua Sha involves applying a smooth-edged tool — traditionally a Chinese porcelain spoon or jade scraper — to oiled skin along the muscles and meridians, using firm stroking movements to bring stagnant Blood and fluids to the surface. The characteristic redness or petechiae (sha) produced indicates the movement of stagnant Qi and Blood. Modern research has found that Gua Sha reduces inflammatory markers and promotes circulation in treated areas. It is a powerful treatment for chronic muscle tension, neck and upper back pain, respiratory conditions and early stages of colds and flu. The redness typically fades within 2–4 days.
The ear contains a microsystem of the entire body mapped through auricular acupuncture points, first systematised by French neurologist Paul Nogier in the 1950s and subsequently integrated into the TCM framework. Ear seeds — small Vaccaria seeds or gold pellets adhered to specific auricular points with medical tape — provide ongoing stimulation between acupuncture sessions. Patients are encouraged to gently press the seeds for 1–2 minutes several times daily. Ear seeds are particularly valuable as a cost-effective adjunct for conditions requiring continuous treatment support, including anxiety, insomnia, food cravings, and pain management.
Bowen Therapy is an Australian-developed gentle fascial bodywork technique using precise rolling moves over muscles, tendons and fascia, separated by deliberate rest periods that allow the nervous system to integrate each set of movements. It works via the proprioceptive nervous system to reset muscle tone, release fascial restrictions and shift the autonomic nervous system from sympathetic to parasympathetic dominance. Bowen Therapy is remarkably gentle — suitable for all ages and particularly valuable for those who find deeper manual therapies uncomfortable. It complements acupuncture exceptionally well, addressing structural and fascial patterns that acupuncture alone may not fully resolve.
Holistic psychotherapy at Rainbow Medicine is an integrative approach that weaves together elements of Western counselling and psychotherapy with TCM's understanding of the mind-body-spirit connection. In Chinese Medicine, each organ system governs specific emotions — the Liver relates to anger and frustration, the Heart to joy and anxiety, the Spleen to worry, the Lung to grief and the Kidney to fear. Holistic psychotherapy helps patients explore the emotional and psychological dimensions of their health patterns, supported by acupuncture and herbal medicine that directly address the organ system imbalances connected to their emotional experience. This integrated approach is particularly valuable for anxiety, depression, grief, burnout and the emotional dimensions of chronic illness.
