FAQs › What Happens at My First Acupuncture Appointment?
Your first appointment at Rainbow Medicine includes a comprehensive health intake (45–60 minutes), TCM diagnosis using pulse and tongue assessment, discussion of your treatment plan, and your first acupuncture treatment.
Your first appointment is longer than follow-up visits — typically 60–75 minutes. It begins with a detailed health history covering your main concern, general health, sleep, digestion, emotional wellbeing, menstrual history (for female patients), medications, and health goals.
Your practitioner will then perform TCM diagnostic techniques: pulse palpation (assessing the quality, rate, depth and strength of the pulse at six positions on each wrist) and tongue inspection (colour, shape, coating, and moisture of the tongue). These techniques provide a window into your internal organ function and constitutional pattern that informs the treatment approach.
After diagnosis and discussion of your treatment plan, your first acupuncture treatment takes place in the same appointment. You will be comfortably positioned (usually lying down) while needles are placed and retained for 20–30 minutes. Most patients find this deeply relaxing and many fall asleep.
After treatment, your practitioner will discuss lifestyle recommendations — dietary adjustments, sleep hygiene, stress management, or specific exercises — and outline the suggested treatment schedule. You will leave with a clear understanding of your diagnosis, treatment plan, and expected timeline.
